SEPTEMBER 2017 Ellaktor: Contract for the energy exploitation of Mavrorachi landfill biogas

The project consists in the construction, maintenance and 20-year operation of facilities that will collect and exploit the biogas generated at the Mavrorachi landfill.

ELLAKTOR SA announced that its subsidiary HELECTOR SA signed today, 7 September 2017, a contract with the Regional Association of Solid Waste Management of Central Macedonia for the implementation of the project for the energy exploitation of Mavrorachi landfill biogas.

The project consists in the construction, maintenance and 20-year operation of facilities that will collect and exploit the biogas generated at the Mavrorachi landfill. The Contractor will improve the biogas collection network throughout the landfill and will make new constructions wherever considered necessary. The biogas to be collected will be fed into the new exploitation facility of appropriate capacity for purposes of electricity generation.

It is estimated that approximately 2,000 m22.000/h of biogas will be absorbed, while the electricity annually produced will amount to approximately 5,500 MWh, which suffice to cover the annual electricity needs of approximately 5,500 households.

For the sale of the electricity, the Contractor will enter into an agreement with LAGIE (Operator of the Electricity Market). Through this investment by HELECTOR, the budget of which is estimated at EUR 5 million, the Mavrorachi landfill not only becomes fully compliant with the requirements of the national legislation but is also transformed into a significant source of renewable energy with multiple environmental and economic benefits. Please note that the entire object of the Contract will be financed by the Contractor and the Association will collect a specific rate on the electricity sales during the 20-year concession period.

HELECTOR SA is the environmental project branch of the ELLAKTOR Group, being a leader in waste management and landfill-generated biogas exploitation in Greece. HELECTOR SA has implemented and has been successfully operating similar projects in Greece for over a decade now, including the project of energy exploitation of biogas from the Tagarades restored landfill site, also in the Prefecture of Thessaloniki.
